10/10/2007 - Armstrong Foundation Makes a Difference for Charities in Many Communities

The range of organizations that benefit from the foundation’s generosity includes national organizations including the American Cancer Society, the American Red Cross, and the Salvation Army, to regional groups including the Mississippi Children’s Home Society and the Lancaster (Pa.) Cleft Palate Clinic. More than 200 organizations benefited from Foundation donations in 2006.

With an annual budget of $1.5 million, the Foundation’s philanthropy takes many forms.

The Employee Choice gift matching program, for example, allows full-time and regular part-time employees to increase the value of their own contributions to various charities and organizations. The Foundation also matches gifts from employees to colleges and universities through the Higher Education Gift matching program.

Another program, the U.S. Plant Discretionary program, allows plant managers to submit grant requests to the Foundation on behalf of charitable organizations in their local communities. Through this program, more than $100,000 of the Foundation’s annual budget goes to charitable organizations that are important to Armstrong employees. If you have a special interest in a non-profit organization that could benefit from such a contribution, contact your plant manager or HR manager and ask about directing discretionary funds to your favorite organization.

Approximately $150,000 each year is allocated by the Foundation to college scholarships for the children of employees and retirees. Scholarship winners are chosen for scholastic aptitude, leadership, and good citizenship as determined by testing and other guidelines established by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

Jan Biagio, project manager—Finance and coordinator—Armstrong Foundation, manages the day-to-day operations of the Foundation in consultation with the board of directors: Foundation President John Rigas, AWI senior vice president and general counsel; Steve Senkowski, AWI executive vice president; Don McCunniff, AWI senior vice president—human resources; and Meg Graham, AWI vice president—corporate communications.
