5/3/2000 - Armstrong receives United Way’s Chair’s Award for 2000

The United Way of Lancaster County has honored Armstrong and the company’s Lancaster employees with the agency’s prestigious Chair’s Award for the year 2000.

The agency announced the award during the United Way of Lancaster’s Annual Meeting and Banquet on Wednesday, May 2, at the Lancaster Host Resort and Conference Center.

The Chair’s Award is given to a company or individual who demonstrates commitment to United Way through innovative ideas and actions that improve the community throughout the county.

Presenting the award, Walt Legenstein, United Way Board chair, said, “Tonight, I am pleased to recognize an organization whose employee generosity and exceptional corporate commitment have touched United Way of Lancaster County in many ways.

“They believe in giving back to the community and do so with generosity. They have the largest team at our annual Day of Caring and have employees serving in multiple volunteer positions. The Armstrong Foundation and the employee gifts are the largest in our campaign. Eighty-nine of them are Pacesetters and five are members of the Alexis De Toqueville Society, making gifts of $10,000 each year.”

More than 90 percent of Armstrong’s 2,000-plus Lancaster-based employees contributed to the United Way’s Fund drive last year. Together with the company’s corporate gift, their donations amounted to more than $1 million. Total Lancaster County contributions to the United Way last year were $8 million.

Steve Stockwell, Vice President, Corporate Alliances, who accepted the award, said he did so, “in behalf of Armstrong, the Foundation and the 2000 employees and retirees of AWI who work and live in Lancaster County".

“Needless to say, we are very proud of the support our employees provide the United Way,” Stockwell said. “Our associates are committed to helping the communities where we live and work, and they do it with the company support, encouragement and gratitude.

“This award could not come at a more appropriate time. As of this Friday, we’ll be ramping up our support with a new corporate initiative to help our employees and associates gain a better perspective of what volunteer opportunities exist in the Lancaster community. We hope to give them direction, focus and education in this area of community involvement. This award will go a long way in helping us do that in that it captures the community involvement spirit at Armstrong.” Armstrong Foundation - Armstrong receives United Way’s Chair’s Award for 2000
